02nd November 2007 : Yma o Hyd - Still Here

Though this may seem irrelevant to the non-Welsh, it has a resonance that applies to every underdog. And while I'm aware that it is an ego-trip for a Welshman, the message that 'We're here' is relevant to us all.
I received this from a friend in Wales who has followed Bahamas Rugby for a while and recognises the task ahead of us.

Oh, by the way, the lyrics are in Welsh, the translation is below.

This song is sung at Llanelli Scarlets rugby matches before every game against non-Welsh sides.

Yma o Hyd - Still Here by Dafydd Iwan

Dwyt ti'm yn cofio Macsen,

You won't remember Macsen [Maxim, Emperor of Rome],
Does neb yn ei nabod o;

There are none left who do
Mae mil a chwe chant o flynyddoedd

Sixteen hundred years
Yn amser rhy hir i'r co';

May be too long for most
Pan aeth Magnus Maximus o Gymru

But Magnus Maximus left Wales
Yn y flwyddyn tri-chant-wyth-tri,

In 383
A'n gadael yn genedl gyfan

Since the we've held our nation
A heddiw: wele ni!

And we still stand today

Chorus:
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,

We're still here
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,

We're still here
Er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,

Despite everything
Er gwaetha pawb a phopeth

Despite everything
Ry'n ni yma o hyd.

We're still here

Chwythed y gwynt o'r Dwyrain,

Let the wind blow from the East
Rhued y storm o'r môr,

Let the storm roar in from the sea
Hollted y mellt yr wybren

Let the lightning split the heavens
A gwaedded y daran encôr,

Let the tears of the weak flow
Llifed dagrau'r gwangalon

Let the servile lick the floor
A llyfed y taeog y llawr

Despite the hell around us
Er dued yw'r fagddu o'n cwmpas

Despite the dark that surrounds us
Ry'n ni'n barod am doriad y wawr!

We are ready for the dawn!

Cofiwn i Facsen Wledig
We remember that Maximus the Emperor

Adael ein gwlad yn un darn
Left our nation unbowed

A bloeddiwn gerbron y gwledydd
And we'll shout to all before us

'Mi fyddwn yma tan Ddydd y Farn!'
"We're here until Judgement Day!"

Er gwaetha pob Dic Sion Dafydd,
Though we have our filthy traitors [Dic Sion Daffydd]

Er gwaetha 'rhen Fagi a'i chriw
Despite old Maggie [Thatcher] and her crew

Byddwn yma hyd ddiwedd amser
We'll be here forever

A bydd yr iaith Gymraeg yn fyw!
And our Welsh language too

Like a lot of the Welsh, my main source of rugby news is BBC Wales Scrum V.

I know this may appear a little biased, but... well....erm...

After the absolute debacle against Scotland on the weekend, you'll forgive me for lapsing into nostalgia.

The picture quality's not the best, but you get the general idea.

1. Phil Bennet vs. Scotland - 1977
Triple Crown winner.

2. Gareth Edwards vs. Scotland - 1972

The famous 'muddy corner' try. "It would be a miracle if he scored."

3. Ieuan Evans vs. England - 1993
"Oh glorious stuff!" - emotional commentary.

4. Scott Gibbs vs. England - 1999

"Scott don't DO that."

5. Adrian Hadley vs. England - 1988
"And all of Wales at Twickenham erupts."

6. Keith Jarrett vs. England - 1967

Old black & white footage - you can't make out much, but it looks like his legs aren't moving.

7. Barry John vs. England - 1969
The original 'King John' as opposed to the usurper 'King Johnny' Wilkinson

8. Ryan Jones vs. Scotland - 2005

"Straight between the two second rows. He should have been buried there."

9. Graham Price vs. France - 1975
Here's one for the props - "They'll never believe it in Pontypool."

10. Scott Quinnell vs. France - 1994

"Just look at the look on the face!"

On the weekend, he stalked bumped into Colin Charvis, the ex-Wales captain near the Cricket Club. As Andy pointed out,

I asked him if he was a South Cat Island Charvis or an Acklins Charvis but he said his people weren't from there so I don't think we can claim him.
