U19 Day 3 Play Summary

Venue: Georgetown, Guyana

On a much improved and dryer pitch, Day 3 of the NAWIRA U19 RWC 2007 Qualifier in Guyana saw the USA team defeat Jamaica 45-3 and Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago battling it out in a 0-0 draw.

USA 45 - 3 Jamaica

Nate Ebner opened the scoring for the USA with a penalty after 4 minutes, after early pressure in the Jamaican 25. Closely after the re-start, a poor clearance by Jamaica maintained the pressure and good ball possession and re-cycling by the USA team resulted in fly half Robert Wolfgram going over near to the posts for an 8-0 lead. The conversion was kicked by Nate Ebner. Smithson Tapper retrieved 3 points for Jamaica with a well struck penalty before the USA rounded off the half with a further penalty and two tries, one each for winger Zack Taylor and another by Nate Ebner, both coming after persistent pressure from the USA forwards which kept Jamaica on the back foot and deep in their own half.

Half time score: USA 23 Jamaica 3
USA's Simon Kinet

Hamish Roberts opened the scoring in the second half for the US with a try in the corner. This was followed by a try for Sean Pike as the USA team began to make inroads into the Jamaican back line. Simon Kinet shortly powered his way over to make it 38-3. A blind side move from a 5 yard scrum opened the way for Robert Wolfgram to nip round and score in the corner; Hamish Roberts converted to make the final score USA 45 Jamaica 3

Credit goes to the Jamaican team for some tenacious and hard tackling. The Jamaican team competed to the final whistle and ensure that the USA team worked hard for their victory.

U19 Day 2 Play Summary

Venue: Georgetown, Guyana

Day 2 of the NAWIRA U19 RWC 2007 Qualifier in Georgetown, Guyana saw victories for both Trinidad & Tobago (“T&T”) and the USA, both of whom were making their first appearances in the tournament. Despite very wet conditions and a pitch that was flooded in places, both games produced some good running rugby, strong forward play and entertaining rugby.

Trinidad & Tobago 17 - 3 Barbados

In the first game of the day, T&T controlled much of the first half possession and territory, though through good Barbados defense failed to turn possession into points until mid way through the half when Heron Graham went over in the corner after some sharp handling down the back line. This was closely followed by a penalty try awarded for a high tackle close to the line. The try was converted by Chris Boyak. The second half was a fairly even affair with strong defense and errors by both teams canceling each other out. The only try of the half came from T&T second row Mike Augustus. Late in the match Sean Edwards kicked a penalty for Barbados.

U19 Day 1 Play Summary

Venue: Georgetown, Guyana

On Day 1 of the NAWIRA U19 2007 RWC Qualifier, Jamaica scored a well deserved 19-5 win over the Cayman Islands and Guyana, the reigning Caribbean Champions, were convincing winners against Barbados, 27-0.

Jamaica 19 - 5 Cayman Islands

Both Cayman and Jamaica took time to settle down in the first half with both teams committing some basic handling errors before finding their feet and confidence to spread the ball through the backline and stretch each others defense. Cayman opened the scoring with a try by winger Vasquez who rounded the Jamaican defense to score in the corner. Scores were evened out just before half time when Walker from Jamaica, who looked dangerous throughout, equalized. In a hard fought second half, Jamaica had the upper hand with tries by Walker and Bedward, both being converted by Fly half Tapper.
