Fisherman catches West Indies break

A local Bahamas fisherman has risen through the Caribbean rugby ranks in just six months to win selection for the West Indies squad (RWIST) to compete at the USA Sevens in San Diego, the fourth leg of the IRB Sevens World Series.

Devon "Dan" Woodside was sent by the Bahamas RFU to play rugby in England and the 23 year old has used that recent experience to impress at the regional trials held in Trinidad and Tobago.

Much of Woodside's success can also be attributed to the earlier exposure to the game in the Bahamian RFU's Youth programme.

The West Indies squad to compete in the IRB Sevens World Series is selected from countries across the Caribbean and the final 12 have needed to satisfy stringent fitness requirements set down as a pre-requisite.

The players now return from camp in Trinidad to their respective countries before gathering again to leave the Caribbean on 5 February for a week of training in San Diego ahead of the USA Sevens.

West Indies face a tough challenge in their pool with matches against Series holders Fiji, the Pumas of Argentina and Scotland.

Provisional West Indies squad: Antonio Gibbons (Barbados), Kurt Johnson (Barbados), Kevin Mackenzie (Guyana), Albert Larose (Guyana), Claudius Butts (Guyana), Theo Henry (Guyana), Tom Healy, (Bermuda), Devon Woodside (Bahamas), Derek Hurdle (Bermuda), Graeme Alkins (Trinidad), Jason Clarke (Trinidad) and Kelson Figuero (Trinidad). Traveling reserve: Andre Carbera (Trinidad). Non-travelling reserves: Nyuen Franco (Trinidad), Richard Staglon (Guyana)
