The Bahama Journal has learned that Bahamas Rugby and Football Union's National Men's Team arrived safely in Garrison Savannah, Barbados for the North America and West Indies Rugby Association's (NAWIRA) Digicel Sevens' competition which is set for today and tomorrow.

Sevens' rugby is a fast-paced version of the traditional game. The games format has seven players aside playing against each other in two seven-minute halves.

Fifteen men's teams and seven women's teams have been confirmed for this weekend's event.

The teams playing in the men's pool A are: Bermuda, Guyana, Barbados, Martinique, and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The teams playing in pool B are: The Bahamas, Mexico, Jamaica, Cayman Islands the Dominican Republic.
The teams making up pool C are: The United States (South), Trinidad and Tobago, British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe and St Lucia.

In the women's division, teams from Barbados, the United States, Jamaica, St Lucia, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and St. Vincent and the Grenadines will battle.

Only the top two teams from each pool will advance to the next round on Day two.

Last year The Bahamas finished second in pool C, behind Jamaica and ahead of St. Lucia and Barbados' B team respectively. Jamaica is the defending Championship Cup WInners.

This time around National Coach Andrew Davies noted,

"We need to make sure that we are one of those teams that move on. We are looking for a win against one of the three larger teams, namely Jamaica, Trinidad or Guyana."

The 12-member BRFU's National Team comprises of Captain, Jamaal Curry, 2006 West Indies Rugby team member Jeremico Cooper, Timothy Thompson, Dave Sands, Raymond Simpson, Duran Beadle, Giovanni Rolle (from Freeport), 2005 West Indies Rugby team member, Kevin Salabie, Owen Hanna, Jonathan Sands, Charlie Edwards and Luctonians' team member (England) Devon Woodside. Edwards is the sole new member.

In related rugby news, those BRFU members who are not traveling with the national team, games are scheduled for action beginning 3 p.m. start at the Winton Rugby Field, today.

Corporate Jamaica scorns local rugby

(Jamaica Observer)

The Jamaica Rugby Union (JRU) has been thrown into even deeper financial crisis following a televised display by several of its members who said they were kicked out of the team hotel during the Caribbean Women's 15's Championships held here in September.

JRU public relations officer Rohan Stewart told Sporting World that since the incident, the union has been unable to get sponsorship to send two teams to the Caribbean 7's Championships in Barbados from November 10-13 because companies they have approached have closed the door in their faces, saying they do not want to be associated with that kind of negativity.

Several women's team members and coach Victor Hyde appeared on television on Saturday, September 30 making claims that they had been kicked out of their hotel because the JRU had not paid the bill.

However, JRU chairman, Jacob Thompson said the claims were untrue and that he had personally asked the team members to leave the hotel because of financial constraints the union was facing in staging the Championships.

Thompson said he had footed most of the J$1.8-m cost of hosting the event with some help from the Jamaica Defence Force.

Click image for more on NAWIRA SevensA couple of months ago, we put in a bid to host the North American and West Indies Rugby Association (NAWIRA) Sevens tournament for 2007 - we've just heard that our bid was successful so we'll be hosting the event on November 17th and 18th, 2007.

The tournament will include men's and women's teams from all Caribbean Unions as well as Mexico, Canada and the USA.

The current mandate by NAWIRA is that if the tournament is successfully hosted they will allow the tournament to be hosted again for a second year running, which is why the tournament was in Barbados in 2005 and will be again this year.
So in this regard, we should have the tournament here in 2007 and 2008 which should also double as a RWC 7's Qualifier.

All good news - now the work begins!

Stephen Thompson BRFU secretary

Now I'd like to remind the fat boys (forwards) that while this is a major event, it in no way distracts from regular 15s rugby which is, and always has been, the primary area of focus for Bahamas Rugby. So don't panic Mario.

WINTON FIX-UP
Winton is badly in need of a bit of TLC, so I'd like to ask as many people as possible to get up to there on Saturday, September 9th to clean the place up. The grill will be running and the bar will be open (after we finish). Don't ignore this, we need everyone!
