Three Bahamian players were selected for this weekend's WI Trials:
Dan Woodside of Luctonians RFC (England)

Jeremico Cooper of Cuckoos RFC
Geovanni Rolle of Freeport RFC

Dan was unable to attend due to club commitments in England, but has already been assured a place in the WI squad. Mico, unfortunately couldn't get away from work commitments, but Geo looks like he did enough to get a callback. HOwever, even if he doesn't, at 19 years old, there'll be other opportunities.

This is the official tournament report from Kit Nasciemento, president of the West Indies Rugby Union.

West Indian Rugby Union’s two Development Teams dominated the Carib International Rugby Sevens over the weekend in Trinidad & Tobago.
Rugby West Indies 1 played unbeaten in the tournament defeating West Indies 2, 31-19, in a closely contested Cup Final, both teams displaying entertaining and imaginative rugby.

The West Indies Rugby Union (WIRU) entered the two Development Teams in the annual International Invitational tournament in preparation for the International Rugby Board’s Sevens World Series in San Diego, USA, 9th & 10th February next year. See www.usasevens.com

21st October 2007 : Kurt joins Coventry's 100 club

Winger Kurt Johnson joined an exclusive group of Coventry players when he scored his 100th try for the club in Saturday's 43-16 victory over derby rivals Moseley.

The Barbados international, one of only four players to have reached 100 league tries in senior rugby, became the 13th player in Cov's 133-year history to hit the century mark and the first since Graham Robbins in 1985.

"It's nice to get there," said 30-year-old Johnson, who went in for the third of Coventry's six tries at the Butts Park Arena. "Landmarks are important to me and drive me on as a player.

"Now I want to get to 100 league tries for Coventry - I'm on 93, so hopefully I can do it this season.
"If I'm playing well and scoring tries, especially on the wing, it means that Coventry are winning matches."

Coventry were 10-0 down after 45 minutes, but came back to lead 15-13 at half-time before pulling clear.

"They gave us a challenge but fortunately we managed to climb our way back in and get a foothold," said Johnson.
"We realised that if we increased the tempo and were more direct we could find the space, and it worked."

Coventry winger Kurt Johnson achieved one career landmark last Saturday when he scored his 100th league try and he has now set his sights on another, making his first appearance at Twickenham.

The Barbados international became only the fourth player in National League history to make the ton, when he crossed two minutes after coming on as a tenth minute blood replacement in the National League One defeat by Bedford Blues.

Johnson, who was given a standing ovation by the Coventry faithful, followed Nick Baxter (Worcester, Pertemps Bees and Stourbridge), Eddie Saunders (Rugby Lions) and Dave Scully, Doncaster's former Wakefield, Rotherham and Otley scrum-half, into the record books.

22nd November 2006 : URGENT: Cash for Dan

The Bahamas National 7s Squad in Barbados. Click image to enlarge.
Back Row: (from left to right) - Andy (Coach), Gio, Duran, Dan, Timmy, Jamaal, Owen and Jono

Front Row: Miko, Kevin, Ray, Charlie, DJ

As many of you know, after the NAWIRA Sevens in Barbados, three Bahamian players were shortlisted (or rather longlisted) for the West Indies 7s squad:

Jeremico Cooper

Duran Beadle

Dan Woodside

It seems that Dan has already gone one step further and has been invited to play for the West Indies in Trinidad & Tobago in on December 2nd & 3rd (less than two weeks away). This is a tremendous achievement and one which we all applaude. If he does well in this one he will be selected for the Windies at the IRB Sevens in San Diego.

We are informed that his accommodation and expenses are covered for the duration of his stay in Trinidad, but it has been left up to him (us) to find the money to fly him from the UK for the tournament. He needs a total of $1,000 so between us it should be very easily accomplished. If you'd like to contribute any amount, please contact either me (Ely) or Andrew Davies and I'll come and collect your donation. Either that or you can look for one of us at Winton on Saturday.

Thanks.

Luctonians Update: Ironically, Dan wouldhave won his second cap for Luctonians first team, but was instead travelling to Barbados with the National team. As soon as I have more information, I'll let you know.

As the third placed team in the group stage, after day 1, The Bahamas played in the Plate (or 'B') Competition.

So, The Bahamas finish up with a 4 and 3 record, which, according to Chris Lleida, team manager, is probably a fair reflection on where we stand at the moment. The guys played well, but mistakes were made and lessons were learned.
