An initiative of the Ministry of Sport has resulted in the presence in Trinidad and Tobago of Murray Roulston a former assistant coach of the New Zealand based Hurricanes and Highlanders Super 14 professional rugby union teams.

Roulston, former Director of Coaching for the Otago Rugby Union was the assistant coach of the Hurricanes for five seasons and spent one season with the Highlanders. He has also assisted with the coaching of the Otago NPC side and New Zealand Colts and was a Technical Advisor for the 2006 Vodaphone Wellington Lions in the Air New Zealand Cup competition.

He has also had stints in Japan and Romania.

The experienced and knowledgeable New Zealander will be in T&T for three months.

TTRFU president Leslie Figaro said that he is delighted to get a technical Advisor with the required elite level coaching experience and track record.

"We sought input from the IRB's Lee Smith and Tom Jones. We trust their judgment and guidance in the interest of developing rugby into a global sport."
"Murray will be able to provide the knowledge and guidance that will help improve those who are willing and have the desire to embrace his ideas and methods. I have confidence in the local coaches at national and club level and strongly believe that bringing someone like Roulston will enhance their technical and tactical knowledge."

TTRFU chairman of the selectors and national men's team manager Curtis Nero met with Roulston on Monday to discuss the recent T&T v Bermuda game and T&T's preparation plans for the upcoming NACRA 7s Rugby Championship.

Commenting after the meeting Nero said he was impressed with the depth of knowledge, technical and tactical analysis that the New Zealander brought to the table.

"It was a very constructive meeting. He knows what he knows and does not need to bring anyone down to prove or validate himself. He does not appear to have the personality or attitude that will prove counter productive and defeat the purpose for which he is here." added Nero

Roulston expressed delight to be asked to assist the Caribbean nation and confidence that he will make a positive difference.

"I admire the enthusiasm and passion for the game. I saw it at the T&T/Bermuda game and an under 19 game that I saw last Sunday. I am here to help and share knoweldege, perspective, information and expereince. Make no bones about it. I too will learn from T&T Rugby" said Roulston.
