HARRISON COLLEGE are the champions of the inaugural Barbados Rugby Football Union Under-16 Ten-a-side Schools Rugby Tournament held recently at the Garrison Savannah.

The competition, sponsored by ADeB Consultants, was meant to be a six-team tournament, but Garrison School, Princess Margaret Secondary and Foundation School could not field full squads.

As a result, a Combined Schools squad was formed to make a four-team round-robin competition with each school playing three games.

The St Michael School and Queen's College opened the event with a close hard-fought match until Ché Goring scored a converted try (seven points) to make it 21-12 in favour of St Michael.

Much improved

Harrison College won easily 46-0 against the Combined Schools who were just getting to know each other towards the end of the game.

After a rest, Combined Schools played a much improved game against Queen's College, losing 29-5. Harrison College then took on St Michael, denying them any try-scoring opportunities and running out 20-3 winners.

Combined Schools then challenged the St Michael team after a rest period and were leading up to half-time when the more experienced St Michael players exerted a lot of pressure and Rondel Cumberbatch scored a converted try to give his team a 19-14 win.

Two tries

The final game, between Queen's College and Harrison College, was close until the last five minutes when Under-19 national squad players Bryan Cummings, Chad Sandiford and Kevin Cobham dominanted for Harrison College who scored two tries and went on to win 24-10.

Presentations were made to all the players by a representative of ADeB Consultants.

The Barbados Rugby Football Union has invited all those interested in playing rugby to visit the Garrison on Sundays at 3:30 p.m.
