Report on Trinidad Sevens

Background
We established a management committee and sponsorship funding earlier in the year. As a result, we were able to secure funding earlier. Further, the unions were able to identify key players and provide fitness and speed tests for those players. Thanks to all those unions.
Immediately following the NAWIRA 7’s in The Bahamas, the unions were provided with a long list of players. After discussions with a number of the unions, Bermuda, Bahamas and Cayman agreed to sponsor their players’ airfares. Further, a couple of the players from Guyana and Cayman were able to obtain parental funding. RWI sevens paid for food, accommodation, and in country travel. This was critical for the execution of the program. We had determined that we would attend two tournaments Trinidad and Uruguay. This meant that only one team would be selected for Trinidad.
• Cayman 2
• Guyana 4
• Bahamas 1
• St. Vincent 1
• Trinidad 3

Two players were unavailable. One through illness and the other was not released to play by his club.

We deliberately selected a young squad for this tournament. We had 2 eighteen year olds and 2 19 year olds on the squad with the oldest twenty four. Further, we had one player who had not played a sevens competition in 2 years. With the possibility of up to 8 games, this would give us an excellent opportunity to evaluate new players. For the veteran players, this would provide an opportunity to demonstrate leadership.
