The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) with a successful defence of their NAWIRA Men's Seven's title in mind, is pleased with progress in the Rugby Seven's League, which is concluding this weekend at the National Park.

This year's Seven's League, which ran for five weeks, features five male teams competing for the overall title.

The league accommodates two male teams from Laparkan Hornets and the Guyana Defence Force and one team from Yamaha Caribs. Women also featured in this year's tournament with teams from Hornets and Caribs as well as the GDF women's team.

The tournament is be used as one of the methods of assessing the players in preparation for this year's NAWIRA Caribbean Championships scheduled to be held in Bahamas from November 17 to 18, when Guyana will defend the men's title they won last year when the championships were held in Barbados.

Follow up:

President of the GRFU, Noel Adonis has high expectations for the quality of play in this year's Seven's Squad because of emerging new young talent on the local rugby scene which may be attributed to initiatives of the GRFU and exposure to regional tournaments.

"We are enjoying a high standard in the level of competition in this form of the game as we prepare to defend our title at the NAWIRA Caribbean Seven's Championships. We've realized that they are many young talented players who will be knocking on the door to make the Seven's Championship squad and this healthy competition among players will eventually raise the level of play locally,"

Adonis said.

Adonis added that the weekly league games also benefit female players as well since the GRFU is in the process of building a very strong female team to participate in this year's NAWIRA Caribbean Championships.

Rugby action will continue today with some 10 games.

Regular league games are continuing every weekend throughout the five-week duration of the league.

Once completed, the players will go into intensive training for the NAWIRA Sevens in November.
