It seems the Australian Rugby Union is desperate to hold on to Wallaby star Lote Tuqiri.

The Waratah is currently being chased by several league teams for a return to the NRL, however the ARU appears to be throwing its substantial weight in with some reports stating Tuqiri is being offered up to $A3.5m to stay on after the World Cup.

Tuqiri is the only high profile league convert left in the Wallaby set-up after Wendell Sailor's drug scandal and Mat Rogers' return to league with new franchise the Gold Coast Titans.

The former Brisbane Bronco has made arguably the most successful transition to the 15-man code, starring for the Waratahs and making a strong impact on the international scene.

Given the current shortage of quality outside backs in Australian rugby, the ARU is said to be offering the deal as early as next week.

Remember his infamous spear tackle on Kiwi captain, Richie McCaw?
