The 2007 rugby season kicked off at the South Sound Ground with a taste of things to come.


The Cayman Islands Rugby Football Union (CRFU) chose to start the year with what was effectively a warm up match for August’s Caribbean Championships.


A Cayman team, comprising players who meet the minimum three years residency requirement for the tournament, were matched against players who are currently ineligible.

The first half went badly for the Cayman side, they conceded four tries and were 24-3 down when the whistle blew.


In the second half the team, led by Captain Brad Cowdroy, staged a dramatic recovery. Matching the four tries scored by their opponents, they drove into the lead to take a 29-27 win.


Amongst the winning line up were three of last year’s Academy and HSBC National U19 team who played in Guyana. The CRFU is hoping that by August three or four more youngsters from the Maples and Calder Rugby Academy will join the squad after competing in the International Rugby Board Regional U19 World Cup Qualifiers which will be played in Grand Cayman during July.


Although the final Cayman team is still to be decided, the CRFU says that Andrew Cuff, Josh Clark and Stuart McMillan all fared very well in the match and are expected to compete for starting places come August.
The Caribbean Championships will be played on Grand Cayman between 15 and 26 August.
