The long-awaited BRFU Stella Artois 15s Rugby Season is set to open on Saturday, November 18th with a couple of notable changes to the format.
Nassau Cup Reborn
This season will see twice as many games in Nassau as last year with the reintroduction of the Nassau Cup to augment the BRFU Stella Artois League. The Nassau Cup will be played along the same lines as the League, except that it will only be played in Nassau and, though still competitive will give clubs the opportunity to play 'B' Team players who may not ordinarily get the chance to step up.
Consequently, the 2006/7 Season curtain raiser will feature two matches at Winton Rugby Centre:
| 2:00pm | Cuckoos vs. Baillou | Bahamas League Match |
4:00pm | Cuckoos B vs. Buccaneers | Nassau Cup Match |
Freeport will begin their 2006/7 campaign with a home match against Baillou on Saturday, November 25th. The kick off will be at the more traditional time of 3:00pm
'European' Points System
This season the BRFU will be experimenting with point system that is being increasingly utilized in European rugby. The system has proven to be highly effective in encouranging try scoring over kicking and also provides a points incentive for losing teams to keep fighting right up to the final whistle. It works like this:
| 3 points for a win |
1 point for a tie |
1 bonus point for scoring 4 tries or more |
1 bonus point for losing by 7 points or less |
Strict Kick-Off Times
This season, referees have been informed that each game will kick off at the appointed time, ie: 2pm, 3pm or 4pm.
However many players are ready to play at that time will start the match. THis is to avoid the disrespectful and often embarrassing sight of rugby fans being forced to sit around waiting endlessly for gamesto begin while Prima Donna players waltz into Winton whenever it suits them.
No Excuses
There are NO EXCUSES for a match kicking off late. If a player is unavoidably detained or unavailable, then he should automatically and in good time contact the captain, coach, whoever, to let that person know to allow the club to make accommodations. If any game kicks off with a shortage of players, I recommend that the club identifies and fines those players responsible.
